Thanks!
It's time for a good old-fashioned iStock bloggy meme.
Those of you who have been blogging for some time now (Elizabeth, I'm looking in your direction) are familiar with the concept of a meme. It's this little bite-sized portion of cultural hoo-hah that gets passed around from blog to blog, much like VOX's QotD. Different bloggers all post their own answers to the same question, their own results from the same poll ("Which Superhero Are You?", "Which Creature From the Star Wars Cantina on Tatooine Are You?", "Which Flock Of Seagull Are You?", etc), their own spin on the same ... thing that spins.
So what would an iStock meme be? Anyone? Anyone?
The challenge here is that memes are supposed to be organically viral, not crammed ham-fistedly into our blog circles. Trying to meme a meme should automatically unmemify the would-be meme. That said, lets do it anyway. Someone suggest an iStock meme. Maybe we'll all meme it.
At minilypses and drinking sessions (two similar but actually distinct event types), I've spoken with several other iStockers about ideas that I have in my notebook. I love sharing concepts and getting feedback. The whole dynamic of talking to other stock shooters and iStockers about concepts seems to pull new ideas into my notebook.
But that has always been live and in person. For some reason, I'm kind of wary about putting my ideas out there online. Not that I fear plagiarism, really. I mean, if I haven't even executed the idea yet, can it even be plagiarised? I guess I'm just wary of being beaten to the ... well, h*ck. I guess it is plagiarism I fear.
In the iStock thread related to the NW Washington Mini'Lypse, I asked if any of the other attendees or models are bald - totally, bic-shaven, ping pong ball, bald. I've got some neat concepts built around the idea of "Bald is Beautiful" and some juxtapositioning. I'd like to share the concepts so that I can benefit from my peers' adulation :), but I held back. Talking about the ideas with trusted friends gets me excited to shoot them (the ideas, not the friends), so why not?
On his recent blog post (recent being within the last few hours), Nuno mentioned an idea he's got in the works for an upcoming shoot. Sounds like an awesome idea, and I have no doubt that it will take off and prevent me from ever gaining any ground on him in our race for the gold. See now, he's not afraid to put his ideas out there, so why am I? Am I crazy? Anyone else feel this way?
Look at me, ma, I'm VOXing. I'm not sure exactly how I'll use this blog space. It seems like as good a place as any to record my thoughts on stock photography in general and iStockphoto in particular. I'll start with that. If I veer into comic books, or my family life, my job, or my own navel, perhaps you'll all forgive me.
Many thanks to Donald Gruener for setting me up with the VOX invite. You're a scholar and a gentleman and a hell of a wine photographer.
Over at iStock, I'm currently celebrating the recent approval and high initial rating of this here photo. The model there is Kristina, who is absolutely a dream to work with. I plan to work with her some more in the coming months, hopefully as part of an upcoming iStock mini'lypse.
